This March I have the honour to present new work from my Minderoo Mid - Career Artist Residency in “WATER - loop”, for WARP Contemporary Art Belgium. My art features alongside works from talented local and international artists, farmers, scientists, and ecologists, all of whom contributed ideas towards the exhibition’s central theme of H20.
I am reminded of the 'the wells of Scheerders' where in our childhood we scratched the shark teeth out of the heavy clay. We were aware the land of Waas was once a seabed, and now I see a connection with The Wash on the other side of the North Sea. In the Eocene, 56 million years ago, a "new dawn" emerged when the rise in temperature brought an explosion of mammals including whales and horses.
After a stopover of 8 years in Burundi and Zambia, both continental Africa, I settled in Australia. My studio is located in Walyalup (Fremantle) on the West Coast, the land of the 60,000 year old Noongar Nation. Despite the stirdy crust of basalt, I find myself once again in wetlands, brackish estuary, some now reclaimed footy fields, salt lakes where shorebirds live.
Somewhere, even earlier in time, there were supercontinents. The Irumide Belt below the Great Lakes connected thart part of Africa with Brazil, India and Australia. Like ice shelves, they split apart again over what are now other oceans. If we go far enough, everything was connected at some point in deep time.
What moves me about all this is the transience, the fragility of flora and fauna. I can capture an image, a sculptured moment, something unique, which also disappears. I feel an intense happiness because of the branching that always occurs, like ebb and flow. Precious. I respond with a tribute, a tribute to the water-loop.
In September 2022 I was a resident at the Minderoo Foundation Research Lab in Exmouth where I created a corrosion cast of a fish, which is part of this exhibition.

Mijn herinneringen reiken naar ‘de putten van Scheerders’ waar we in onze kindertijd de haaientanden uit de zware klei krasten. Toen wisten we dat het land van Waas ooit een zeebodem was. Ook aan de overkant van de Noordzee kennen ze The Wash. In het Eoceen, 56 miljoen jaar terug, brak een “new dawn” aan toen de temperatuurstijging een explosive van zoogdieren bracht: walvissen en paarden onder meer.
Na een tussenstop van 8 jaar in Burundi en Zambia, beide continentaal Afrika, heb ik me in Australië gevestigd. Mijn atelier ligt in Walyalup (Fremantle) aan de Westkust, het gebied van de 60,000 jaar oude Noongar Natie. Ondanks de korst van harde basalt bevind ik me ook hier in ‘wetlands’, ziltige meren – of drooggelegde voetbalvelden -- waar watervogels landen.
Ergens, nog vroeger in de tijd, waren er supercontinenten. De Irumide Belt beneden de Grote Meren verbond een deel van Afrika met Brazilië, Indië en Australië. Als ijsschotsen veerden ze weer van elkaar weg over wat nu andere oceanen zijn. Als we ver genoeg gaan was alles verbonden op een of ander moment in deep time.
Wat me ontroert aan dit alles is de vergankelijkheid, de kwetsbaarheid van flora en fauna. Ik vat een beeld, een moment in drie D, iets unieks, dat ook weer verdwijnt. Ik voel een intens geluk om de vertakking die zich telkens voordoet, als eb en vloed. Precious. Ik beantwoord met een tributum, een eerbetoon aan de water-loop.
